ADCC was created by Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nayan, son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former president of the United Arab Emirates, on suggestion of Renzo and Royler Gracie. In addition, the championships were started after Sheik Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nayan was impressed with the grappling Matt Hume taught his fighters. Significant prize money is awarded to winners, and athletes who have been successful at the highest levels of competition in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo, Sambo and mixed martial arts regularly participate.
